Rwanda Unveils Dedicated Bus Lanes as Major Step Toward Modern, Efficient Public Transport

Rwanda has officially joined a growing list of African countries investing in dedicated bus-only lanes, marking a significant milestone in the country’s transformation of urban mobility. The newly introduced lane, located along the busy Downtown–Sonatube–Remera corridor, is part of a wider Government strategy to ease congestion, enhance service delivery, and promote sustainable transport across Kigali.

The initiative aligns with President Paul Kagame’s broader agenda to modernize national infrastructure and position Rwanda as a regional model for efficient, citizen-centered development. By prioritizing mass transit, the Government aims to reduce travel times, improve reliability, and ensure that public transport becomes the most convenient option for urban commuters.

At the heart of this reform is the new service-led public transport model, designed to shift operations from individual competition to coordinated performance. Under this framework, Ecofleet Solutions has been tasked with managing the national bus fleet, ensuring proper allocation, maintenance, and deployment of buses across all corridors and routes. This approach allows operators to focus on meeting service standards, as they now work under performance-based contracts rather than relying solely on ticket revenue.

Rwanda National Police continues to play a critical role in the successful roll-out of the dedicated lanes. Officers are actively guiding road users, directing commuters to correct pick-up points, and ensuring that the new system runs smoothly. The professionalism of Rwandapolice already recognized among the best in Africa has contributed greatly to the orderliness observed during the implementation phase.

As Kigali’s population and vehicle numbers grow, the dedicated bus lane project represents a forward-looking solution to urban mobility challenges. Authorities say the initiative will continue expanding in phases, reinforcing Rwanda’s commitment to creating a modern, efficient, and environmentally friendly transport network.
